A recent study reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
