Multiple messages between adjudicated child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and ex- US finance chief Larry Summers have emerged this week, indicating the pair served as trusted allies.
These exchanges, dating from 2013 to early 2019, show the two men exchanging personal â and at times unseemly â perspectives on politics and interpersonal dynamics.
âIâm trying to figure why [the] American elite believe if u take the life of your baby by violence and neglect it must be unimportant to your acceptance to Harvard,â|âIâm trying to|I am attempting to|I'm struggling to} determine why [the] American elite feel if u take the life of your baby by violence and desertion it must be irrelevant to your acceptance to Harvard,â} Summers emailed to Epstein in a 2017 email. âBut made advances toward a few women 10 years ago and cannot work at a network or think tank. KEEP CONFIDENTIAL THIS IDEA.â
At that time, Harvard University was wrestling with an acceptance controversy after a previously incarcerated womanâs acceptance to a PhD program. Summers, a one-time president of the university who lost his position amid a controversy after making sexist comments about female academics, went on to say in the email to Epstein: I noted that half of the IQ in [the] world was held by women without stating they are more than 51 percent of the populace.â
Summers was previously a leading light in Democratic circles â a ex- treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, one of the main architects of Barack Obamaâs response to the economic downturn, and a stalwart presence in the progressive media. But concerns have remained about his association with Epstein, a former contact of Donald Trump. Epstein was accused of a extensive sex trafficking of minors operation before his demise in jail in 2019 in New York City.
Following disclosure of a earlier set of emails between Epstein and Summers in a 2023 article, a representative for Summers commented that he âprofoundly regrets being in contact with Epstein after his convictionâ.
Democratic lawmakers made public emails from the Epstein estate this week that indicate Epstein was of the opinion Trump was knew about conduct by the now-convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. In retaliation, GOP lawmakers issued a larger tranche of 20,000 emails from the Epstein estate.
These records show that Summers kept up amicable contact with the adjudicated child sex trafficker well into 2019, with the most recent email exchange happening only months before Epsteinâs apprehension.
Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday that he would be asking the Department of Justice and the FBI to examine Epsteinâs âinvolvement and connectionâ with Summers, among other prominent Democratic figures and corporate executives.
In the emails, Summers and Epstein discuss politics â especially Summersâs dislike for Trump â as well as the particulars of non-profit social networking â and women. Summers, 70, shared with Epstein in a 2019 exchange about his overtures toward an unidentified woman, and being rebuffed.
âshes smart. making you pay for past errors,â Epstein replied in an exchange on 16 March. âignore the daddy im going to go out with the motorcycle guy, you reacted well.. annoyed shows caring., no whining showed strentgh.â
Summers reiterated his sorrow in a recent statement. âI have great regrets in my life,â he said. âAs I have said before, my association with Jeffrey Epstein was a major error of judgement.â
Summers was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Epstein contributed more than $9m to Harvard and its associated programs between 1998 and 2008, and was appointed a visiting fellow to carry out research. The university later determined Epstein âlacked the educational background visiting fellows normally possess and his application proposed a course of study Epstein was not prepared to pursueâ.
Harvard only discontinued accepting Epsteinâs donations after he confessed to child sex offenses in 2008.
By that time Obamaâs profile was growing. Summers would later secure appointment as director of the White House National Economic Council from January 2009 until November 2010.
After Summers departed the White House, he began soliciting Epstein for philanthropic advice for his wife, Elisa New, a Harvard professor pursuing a poetry project. Epstein and his foundations made gifts to projects linked to Summersâs wife, and the two men got together a dozen times between 2013 and 2016, often for dinner.
After news about Epsteinâs donations came out, Newâs charity made a donation âabove and beyondâ of that received to anti-sex-trafficking organizations.
