Two unbeaten runs remained intact at Anfield, but only one team could take real satisfaction from the result. Daniel Farke's men executed a textbook strategy of frustrating and restricting the hosts, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's reign underscoring the lingering issues behind the current title holders' latest recovery.
A lacklustre scoreless draw, the first in 84 matches for Liverpool, was primarily attributable to the immense dominance of the outstanding centre-back pairing Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk, coupled with the home side's failure to break down a compact Leeds unit. Liverpool were limited to hopeful half-chances, and a sprinkling of discontent echoed around the famous ground at the full-time whistle on a sluggish display.
"If I don't utilise the entire squad and we have a schedule like this, I would never do this," the manager explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all are aware his recent history was challenging. He is in incredible form but it's important I look after him and sometimes the head needs to win over the emotion."
Liverpool at first showed more zip and sharpness than in recent outings, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the right side. Nevertheless, golden opportunities were few and far between. Their primary moments in the opening half fell to striker Hugo Ekitiké.
Ekitiké's evening worsened when he did not manage to hit the target with his clearest chance. Meeting a pacy Frimpong cross in the goal area, the attacker miscued a header that hit the goalkeeper while facing an unguarded net.
For Leeds, their most notable opportunity came from an Liverpool goalkeeper error. The experienced shot-stopper sent a careless clearance directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose first-time effort back down the centre was gathered by the recovering Alisson.
The match descended into a scrappy affair, low on incident. The midfielder, returning from a ban, forced a save from Perri from range. The resulting scramble led to Ampadu controlling the ball, awarding the hosts a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz wasted into the defence.
Slot introduced a triple substitution to inject urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk came close to heading his team in front from a set-piece, his effort bouncing just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his goal run for Leeds in the final minutes, but his finish was flagged out for a tight offside call. Ultimately, the two sides had to accept a single of the points.
