Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
