Space Traveler Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
