South African Player Wessels Receives Nine-Game Suspension for Genital Grab

Rugby player action

Wessels is ruled out for South Africa's upcoming test matches.

Springbok front-rower Wessels faces a suspension of nine games for making contact with Josh Murphy's genitals during the Bulls' United Rugby Championship victory over Connacht.

The altercation occurred in the 18th minute of the close contest against Connacht on last Friday, with Connacht forward Josh Murphy being shown a 20-minute red card after striking back by hitting Wessels on the head area.

Following the Connacht player reported the incident to the match official, the contact was reviewed by the television match official, who concluded no definitive proof.

The Bulls player remained on the pitch until he was replaced in the second half of the match.

While the United Rugby Championship announced that Murphy's temporary sending-off was withdrawn by a disciplinary panel, the Springbok was found to have violated the code of conduct, which specifies:

"Any athlete should not engage in actions that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship. Such behavior covers touching, twisting or compressing the private areas."

Disciplinary officials were satisfied that the incident met the level for dismissal and justified a three-month ban, the shortest ban under World Rugby rules for such an violation.

Nonetheless, Wessels' ban was reduced by 21 days because of his cooperative behavior during the proceedings and his clean disciplinary history.

Wessels and the Bulls have the right to challenge the decision, but currently, the ban will rule the 24-year-old out of the Springboks' fall internationals against the Brave Blossoms, Les Bleus, Italy and Ireland.

He will also miss the his club's league matches against Warriors, the Emirates Lions and the Sharks, as well as European cup games with Bègles and Saints.

The prop has earned 10 caps for the Springboks and was part of their Rugby Championship-winning team over the summer.

Murphy, in contrast, is available to face the Irish rivals in this weekend's inter-provincial derby after being exonerated.
