Mikel Arteta Concedes Extended Role Is Tied to Securing Major Honors.
Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.
Reflecting on: From Appointment to Present
Arteta took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. But, that initial silverware stands as his lone top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Yes,” the manager said upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”
This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met the day after his hiring was confirmed.
Present Challenges
Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced first place in the Premier League for the first time. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.
He is under a contract with 18 months to run on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that results must come promptly.
Earning the Right
Arteta elaborated, stressing the ongoing need to justify his role. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”
He added, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”
Squad Setbacks
The squad faces the weekend fixture coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is expected to keep him out for the coming weeks.
Evolved Priorities
Despite the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are completely changed from when he began his reign.
He pointed to the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”
In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our aim is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
