Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Area inhabitants informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and suspected escape routes.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.
The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
