The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been discovered inside freezers in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been missing for a number of months, were detected on Friday. The cooling units were concealed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were detained in June. The elder brother, a work associate of the Syrian woman, informed authorities last week that there had been an accident—but rejected intentional killing.

Informing reporters previously, a spokesman for the legal authorities stated the pair were being detained on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

Personal details of those concerned have not been released by authorities, in following national regulations.

Their going missing was originally brought to light by the cousin of the mother, who resides in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Police stated the 55-year-old suspect informed them at the time she had gone on an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then discovered to be utilized overseas repeatedly.

However when investigators entered the mother's apartment, her cellphone was located.

Someone also stated listening to a loud noise in the flat, and shouts of "mum" on the day the pair were believed to have vanished.

A broader official inquiry was started, with investigators finding various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—including a job termination message to her employer and communications to the male colleague.

Authorities confirmed a significant cash transfer was also moved to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed media representatives on that day that a storage facility had been rented out before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been positioned inside.

The male siblings extracted the appliance from the unit on the day the woman and her child vanished, she revealed. And a shortly afterward, they obtained an additional appliance.

Officials state they believe this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the condition of the victims," Tersch commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—noted the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the bodies were professionally hidden and were not found during a earlier inspection.

While the men were detained in June, it was only on 12 November that the suspect admitted to an occurrence and to concealing the remains. He rejects any intent to kill, officials confirmed.

In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a cover-up but disputed involvement in a murder.

The two suspects are currently in pre-trial detention in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, situated at a distance.

Via a shared communication, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "suspected killing of two... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of two individuals and reveals a brutal scheme".

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
