California's Governor Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about seriously considering a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on Fox News. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened revoking the state's ability to issue CDLs.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, after a recent deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had previously stated he was holding back additional funds from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a previous comment addressing the secretary's comments. "For now, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recent study showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters said that the governor should run for president in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
